Harelaw Trout Fishery

Harelaw offers boat or bank anglers some of the best top of the water dry fly fishing in Scotland

About Harelaw Trout Fishery

Set in the heart of East Renfrewshire’s stunning moorland, Harelaw Trout Fishery is one of Scotland’s top destinations for fly fishing. Just a short drive from Glasgow, the fishery offers a peaceful, scenic environment with first-class angling facilities for both experienced fly fishers and those new to the sport.

Built in 1844, Harelaw is a large shallow reservoir, extending to 102 acres and includes over 3 miles of superb wading banks, 4 dam walls, and three islands. An averaging depth of 5-9 feet ensures that fish can be found virtually anywhere on the fishery, with a maximum of 13ft of water. Harelaw’s moorland setting is also home to a variety of birds and wildlife.

There are three islands and many shallow bays and peninsulas offering quality drifts and wading from both boat and bank. Harelaw is almost 600ft above sea level and fishing is best with a South Westerly wind with slightly overcast skies or into sunset. The Fishery is stocked weekly with grade 1 Rainbows and Blues from 2Ib upwards. A large head of natural wild brown trout are also present – caught in 2008 to over 7lbs and again in February 2009 to nearly 8lbs.

We also host several Competitions over the course of the year including The Scottish National Prelim & Semi Finals, The Fastmail Tackle Pairs, Harelaw Pairs, SNFFl Premier League and actively support both the Scottish Youth & The Scottish Disabled Flyfishing Teams.

Harelaw Trout Fishery is proud to announce the introduction of significant accessibility upgrades, making it easier than ever for anglers with disabilities to enjoy boat fishing in the heart of the Renfrewshire moorland. A newly constructed, custom-built wheelchair-friendly ramp now provides safe and direct access to the water, complementing the arrival of a specially adapted Coulum 16 Wheelyboat. Designed with the needs of disabled anglers in mind, this purpose-built craft offers enhanced stability, comfort, and ease of use, and is now available to hire. These improvements mark a major step forward in Harelaw’s commitment to making angling available to all.

The Scottish Disabled Angling Team regularly hold both practice sessions and competitions at Harelaw, recognising it as one of the most accessible and welcoming venues in the country.

Ross Murdoch, proprietor of Harelaw Trout Fishery, commented: “Angling should be a sport for everyone. We’re proud to be creating a fishery where no one is left behind, regardless of mobility or ability. This is just the beginning of what we aim to do to ensure truly inclusive access.” With its continued support for accessible angling, Harelaw is fast becoming a flagship venue for disabled boat fishing in Scotland.
